Trafficked Gal’s Human Rights Case Moving Forward

I have some amazing news to share! As many of you know, earlier this year, I assisted a local survivor of sex trafficking in filing a Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) application against two respondents: 1) her housing provider, Gateway Co-operative Homes Inc., and 2) the County of Simcoe, because Gateway unlawfully evicted her and both Gateway and the County did not accommodate her mental disabilities. You can read more about her case in this blog post.

Last month, the respondents both asked the HRTO to dismiss her case because the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) had already dealt with the issues of her case, and the HRTO was considering it! But today, the HRTO sent her an email, saying the respondents were willing to mediate and asked if she’d be willing to mediate too:

In her HRTO application, she had checked-off that she did not want to mediate, but considering that mediation could potentially speed up the process, she agreed to try mediation. We both feel pretty lucky that her case wasn’t dismissed and personally, I’m very excited to see what happens next.

Neither one of us are familiar with the HRTO’s mediation process, but after Googling it, I definitely think its worth a try:

Anyways, I realize this was just a short post but I wanted to share the good news, and give hope to those who’re going through the same thing, or a similar situation.

Good things are possible.
